Gongoriinae, Houlletea, Stanhopeas and related genera are known for large, pleated leaves.  They produce wonderful blooms with intricate pollination structures.  Some of this genera have unusual open flowers channeled with avenues for insect entry and pollination.  Others exhibit downward-growing inflorescences that may be bird or bat pollinated.  The majority do best planted in hanging baskets as to let their spikes hang freely.  They are deliciously scented and floriferous.  The light and temperatures they require are similar to that of the Cattleya genera.  Bright but diffused light (around 3000 foot-candles), high humidity with good air circulation,  and moderate to high temperatures (70’s F).
